Palace Theatre Centenary Concert

Monday, 19 August 2013

Some people have been asking questions about the Palace Theatre’s Centenary Concert, taking place on Saturday 7 September.

It is clear now that our involvement in this show has not been communicated well to members, for which I apologise on behalf of the committee. Hopefully, this will help clarify the situation.

ROS, like the other local societies, has been asked to perform a 15 minute ‘slot’ at the concert. The show is broken down into eras, and we were asked to do the 1980s/90s. Due to space limitations, each society is only allowed to bring a maximum of 16 performers.

We decided we would do a non-stop, all-singing, all-moving medley of songs from the great musicals of the period, including snippets from Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Cats, Phantom and a few more.

To show ourselves at our best, we also decided that we should perform in full 4-part harmony (SATB), where applicable. Therefore, we needed to find people who could cover each voice range. Knowing that, as always, we have more ladies than men to call upon, we decided on a split of 5 sops, 5 altos, 3 tenors and 3 basses.

The first people who volunteered to take part were from the committee. After that, we needed to fill the remaining positions with strong singers who could hold their ‘line’, could move well, would learn the whole thing by heart and, vitally, could commit to most of the nine additional rehearsals we have scheduled for this.

Various people were approached directly to see if they were able to take part. Nobody was deliberately excluded. But being such a large society, there was sadly only ever going to be a small proportion of our members who could be included.

As much as we would have liked everybody to participate, we were specifically limited to only 16 – just like all the other societies. They, too, will have had the same problem deciding who to involve.

We are sad for anybody who feels left out, but we were simply not allowed to take anybody else. We do hope, however, that all our members who are not on stage will support the Society (and all the other participants) by going to see the show on Saturday 7 September.

Best wishes to all.

As in previous years, we have created a fabulous sponsorship offer for Whistle Down the Wind.

This is a great package, offering an advert in our programme, tickets to the show, interval refreshments and more. We are hoping it will appeal to any business, no matter how small, who would like to support our Society, but still get a great deal for their money (just £75)!
